Micura Services Limited’s (MSL) Operations Management and Human Resources teams recently held a meeting with representatives of the Dockworkers Branch of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) to discuss matters concerning dockworkers and ways to further strengthen the working relationship between Management and the Union.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to engage on issues affecting the welfare of workers, operational coordination and the broader working relationship between the company and the Union.
Key areas discussed included:
1. Payment Process and Prompt Remuneration
Discussions focused on ways to improve the existing payment process and develop a more prompt and effective payment structure for workers. The importance of ensuring that payment processes are properly coordinated and handled efficiently was highlighted as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare and maintain a positive working environment.
2. Tonnage Declaration
The meeting also addressed issues relating to tonnage declaration and the need for proper and accurate documentation of cargo handled during operations. Given the relationship between cargo tonnage and dock labour activities, accurate tonnage records are important for transparency, operational accountability and appropriate payment calculations.
3. Manning Scale
Manning scale was another key area of discussion, with attention given to the appropriate deployment and number of dockworkers required for different operations. Proper manning is important to ensure that operations are adequately staffed while maintaining productivity, efficiency and safe working practices.
4. Role of the Union District/Unit at the Workplace
The role and responsibilities of the Union’s district and unit representatives within the workplace were also discussed. The conversation emphasized the importance of constructive engagement between Union representatives, Management and workers in addressing workplace matters and maintaining effective communication.

Beyond the specific issues discussed, the meeting served as an avenue for open communication and constructive engagement between Micura Services Limited’s Management and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Dockworkers’ branch.
